Worms and Shots: Your guide to Pet Vaccination and Deworming

Turning “Fetch” into “Fetched Immunity” has its wide celebrated importance in keeping your furry partners-in-crime on their toes. Let’s understand why.

Zoonoses, those sneaky diseases that can jump from animals to humans, are a bit like unexpected party crashers when it comes to street dogs. You inadvertently bring home an unwanted souvenir from that cute but stray pup you met on the corner. Whether it's a pesky parasite, a bacteria buddy, or a viral villain, street dogs can carry all sorts of germs that humans and pets definitely don't want as party guests in their bodies. So, to keep the home free from these uninvited troublemakers, it's all about practicing good hygiene, avoiding too much cuddle time with strays, and making sure your own furry pals are up-to-date on their vaccinations and deworming.

Even though your furry friend may spend most of their time lounging indoors, it's important to remember that parasites can still find their way into their cozy abode. Regular deworming is like giving your pet's health a thorough spring cleaning, ensuring they stay happy and healthy from the inside out and preserving your pet's vitality.

Just like humans need their shots to stay strong and healthy, our pets rely on vaccinations to keep them chasing their tails for years to come. These tiny doses of protection pack a powerful punch against a rogues' gallery of nasties like rabies, distemper, and parvovirus. So, a well-timed vaccination can certainly help them conquer enemies lurking in the air.

Every pet is unique, and their deworming and vaccination needs may vary based on factors like age, lifestyle, and overall health. Designing a vaccination and deworming plan that's tailored to their specific needs and ensuring they receive the right level of protection is of utmost importance.

Here's a specialized Vaccination and Deworming guide customized for those residing in India.

In adherence to a comprehensive vaccination schedule, the administration of vaccines for canine health follows a strategic timeline aligned with the age and developmental stages of the dog.

Core Vaccines:

  • At 6-8 weeks of age, the DHPPi (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) vaccine, combined with protection against Leptospirosis, is administered, constituting the primary immunization phase.

  • This regimen is reiterated at 8-10 weeks and 10-12 weeks of age, referred to as the first and second booster doses, respectively, to reinforce the initial immunity.

  • At 12 weeks, the Rabies vaccine is introduced to the regimen, followed by a booster at 16 weeks.

  • Subsequently, an annual vaccination protocol is established, encompassing DHPPi + Leptospirosis and Rabies vaccinations to ensure sustained protection against prevalent diseases and maintain canine health throughout their lives.

Deworming:

The frequency of deworming sessions varies throughout different stages of a dog's life. The dosage of deworming depends on your pet's weight. So, make sure to check their weight and administer the correct dose each time.

  • For puppies up to 3 months old, deworming is recommended fortnightly, every two weeks, to combat the potential transmission of parasites inherited from their mothers.

  • As they grow from 3 to 6 months old, the schedule shifts to monthly deworming to address their evolving needs.

  • Once a dog reaches 6 months and beyond, deworming typically occurs every three months. However, this frequency can be influenced by the individual dog's lifestyle and interaction with other dogs. Those with frequent contact with other animals or residing in areas prone to parasites may require more frequent deworming to ensure optimal health and protection against worms.

With regular deworming, you can rest easy knowing that you're giving your pet the best possible defense against those unwanted hitchhikers. Remember, a little prevention goes a long way in keeping your indoor pet healthy, happy, and ready to pounce on life's adventures – whether they're exploring the great indoors or simply soaking up the sun by the window. A healthy pet is indeed a happy pet!
